湯馬士‧昃臣在正式退休前，自1876年起曾三度為滙豐掌舵。他上任之初，銀行正面對財務困境。到1888年他第一次退休時，銀行已蓬勃發展。隨後在1890年和1893年，銀行再次陷入困境，昃臣兩度重返銀行，並如他所言，帶領銀行「恢復穩健」。

汤马士·昃臣在正式退休前，自1876年起曾三度为汇丰掌舵。他首次上任时，银行正面临财政困境。到1888年他第一次退休时，银行已恢复繁荣。随后在1890年和1893年，银行再次陷入困境，昃臣两度重返银行，正如他自己所言，帮助银行“重回正轨”。

Thomas Jackson se jubila tras haber dirigido el HSBC durante tres períodos desde 1876. Cuando él asumió su función, estábamos atravesando dificultades financieras. Para cuando se retiró por primera vez en 1888, ya estábamos prosperando. En 1890 y 1893 tuvimos que enfrentar nuevos desafíos y Jackson regresó a, como él mismo lo expresó, "equilibrar las cosas".

Après avoir dirigé la banque à trois reprises depuis 1876, Thomas Jackson prend sa retraite. Lors de sa première prise de fonctions, HSBC faisait face à des difficultés financières. Devenue prospère, au moment de sa retraite en 1888, la banque connut à nouveau des difficultés et Thomas Jackson revint, en 1890 et en 1893 pour, selon ses propres termes, « la remettre à flot ».

Thomas Jackson retires, having led HSBC for three periods since 1876. We had faced financial difficulties when he first took the role. We were prospering by his first retirement in 1888. Twice more, in 1890 and 1893, we fell on hard times and Jackson returned to, in his own words, set the bank ‘on an even keel’.

The front page of the Journal of the American Asiatic Association, dated Monday, June 4, 1900. Text reads: Dinner in honor of Sir Thomas Jackson, Chief Manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. It states the time and date of the dinner at the Metropolitan Club, 60th St and Fifth Avenue, on Tuesday May 8th, at 7pm. Up to 80 guests can attend. The next paragraph announces the dinner location changing to Delmonico's, to accommodate the excess quote, number of members and their friends who desired to meet Sir Thomas Jackson , end quote. Total guest numbers were 115 subscribers and 4 specially invited guests.

1923年滙豐委托專人鑄造一對銅獅 – 史提芬和施迪，守護上海新落成的辦公大樓。當時正值橡膠和錫貿易在亞洲蓬勃發展，我們的分行網絡也隨之迅速擴張。董事會又投資另建多座新銀行大樓，彰顯我們對該地區的信心。

1923年汇丰委托专人铸造一对铜狮 – 史提芬和施迪，守护上海新落成的办公大楼。此时正值橡胶与锡贸易在亚洲蓬勃发展，我们的分行网络也因此迅速扩张。董事会又投资兴建多座新银行大楼，以体现我们对该地区的信心。

Un par de leones de bronce –Stephen and Stitt– reciben la orden de vigilar nuestras nuevas instalaciones en Shanghái en 1923. Llegan en un momento de rápida expansión de nuestra red de sucursales debido al floreciente comercio de caucho y estaño en Asia. El Consejo del banco también invierte en varios nuevos y grandiosos edificios a fin de subrayar nuestra confianza en la región.

Deux lions en bronze, Stephen and Stitt, sont commandés pour monter la garde devant nos nouveaux locaux à Shanghai en 1923. Leur arrivée coïncide avec le développement rapide de notre réseau de succursales, porté par le commerce florissant du caoutchouc et de l’étain en Asie. Le conseil d'administration investit dans plusieurs autres bâtiments impressionnants, traduisant notre confiance dans la région.

A pair of bronze lions – Stephen and Stitt – are commissioned to guard our new premises in Shanghai in 1923. They arrive as we are rapidly expanding our branch network, thanks to the flourishing rubber and tin trade in Asia. The board also invests in several other impressive new bank buildings to underline our confidence in the region.

咆哮的二十年代過後，迎來了華爾街股災和大蕭條，滙豐卻以行動表明對香港的信心，啓動了皇后大道中1號新總部工程。建築師接到的指示非常簡單：「請為我們建造世界上最頂尖的銀行大廈。」這座宏偉的藝術裝飾風格大樓於1935年落成，曾是開羅到三藩市之間最高聳的建築。

咆哮的二十年代之后，华尔街股灾与全球大萧条接踵而至。汇丰通过行动表达了对香港的坚定承诺，在皇后大道中1号兴建新总部。我们向建筑师下达的设计指示非常简洁：「请为我们建造世界最顶尖的银行大楼。」这座装饰艺术风格的宏伟大楼于1935年竣工，曾是开罗到旧金山之间最高的建筑。

Los felices años veinte dan paso al crack de Wall Street y a la Gran Depresión. Manifestamos nuestro compromiso con Hong Kong encargando una nueva sede en 1 Queen's Road Central. La consigna para los arquitectos es simple: '‘Por favor, constrúyannos el mejor banco del mundo'. La gran oficina Art Deco, completada en 1935, es la estructura más alta entre El Cairo y San Francisco.

La période des Années folles s'achève par le krach boursier de Wall Street et la Grande dépression. La banque réaffirme son engagement envers Hong Kong en construisant un nouveau siège au 1, Queen's Road Central. Les consignes données aux architectes sont simples : « Veuillez s’il vous plaît nous construire la meilleure banque au monde ». Le majestueux bâtiment Art Déco, achevé en 1935, est alors le plus grand immeuble érigé entre Le Caire et San Francisco.

The Roaring Twenties give way to the Wall Street Crash and Great Depression. We signal our commitment to Hong Kong by commissioning a new headquarters at 1 Queen's Road Central. The brief to the architects is simply: 'Please build us the best bank in the world'. The grand Art Deco office, completed in 1935, is the tallest structure between Cairo and San Francisco.

Nuestra oficina de Hong Kong fue tomada por el ejército japonés en diciembre de 1941, y la administración se transfirió provisoriamente a Londres. Los empleados de toda la red mostraron un gran coraje y se quedaron en sus puestos hasta el último minuto para ayudar a los clientes. Muchos fueron capturados y confinados.

En décembre 1941, notre siège de Hong Kong est occupé par l'armée japonaise et la direction est temporairement transférée à Londres. Dans l'ensemble du réseau, les employés font preuve d'un courage remarquable, restant à leur poste jusqu'à la dernière minute pour servir les clients. Nombre d'entre eux sont faits prisonniers et internés.

Our Hong Kong office is taken over by the Japanese army in December 1941, and management is temporarily transferred to London. Employees across the network show tremendous courage, staying at their posts until the last minute to help customers. Many are captured and interned.

A typed letter from Acting Chief Manager Arthur Morse to Kellogg, dated December 17th, 1941. Text reads: My dear Kellogg, TEMPORARY TRANSFER OF HEAD OFFICE. I attach a copy of my telegram of 16th instant. I think I can safely say that no more unpleasant duty has ever fallen to the lot of any Official of our Bank then has fallen up on my shoulders in having to send this telegram. It has been a week or more of great anxiety to know what steps I should take, and it was only last Friday that a message came through from HongKong to the Colonial Office informing them of Grayburns wishes with regard to the Head Office, but that telegram indicated the steps I have taken were only to be taken in the event of Hongkong falling into enemy hands. However, after considerable discussions with the Authorities here, which were reinforced by telegram from Stuart through the Governor of the Straits Settlements, it was decided that the only practical and proper step to take was that which I have now taken.

戰後滙豐總部重回香港。淪陷期間日軍强迫我們的員工簽發鈔票，但由於沒有法定支持，這些鈔票實質上毫無價值。滙豐宣布承擔這些損失，並會承兌這些鈔票，恢復大衆對港元的信心，對於重建香港經濟有關鍵作用。

La sede vuelve a Hong Kong después de la guerra. Durante la ocupación, el ejército japonés obligó a nuestro personal a firmar y emitir billetes. Al no tener respaldo legal, estos 'billetes emitidos bajo coacción' carecían, en esencia, de valor. Aceptamos la pérdida y anunciamos que pagaríamos el monto adeudado por los billetes. Esto restauró la confianza del público en la moneda y fue determinante para la reconstrucción económica de Hong Kong.

Après-guerre, le siège social est réinstallé à Hong Kong. Sous l'occupation, les militaires japonais avaient contraint notre personnel à signer et à émettre des billets de banque. Sans garantie légale, ces billets n’ont en réalité aucune valeur. Nous acceptons cette perte et annonçons que nous allons honorer les billets. Cette mesure a rétabli la confiance du public dans la monnaie et a été déterminante pour la reconstruction économique de Hong Kong.

Head office returns to Hong Kong after the war. The Japanese military had compelled our staff to sign and issue banknotes during occupation. Without legal backing these 'duress notes' are essentially worthless. We accept the loss and announce we will honour the notes. This restores public confidence in the currency and is critical to Hong Kong’s economic reconstruction.
