19 Mar 1917: joined King's Royal Rifle Corps 11 Apr 1916. Trained at Seaford. Left for France in July. Accidently fractured ankle near Mametz Wood while waiting in reserve trench, 29/08/1916. Invalided home to Southport Hospital then to Llandudno Hospital; went before Medical Board at Fazakerley, Liverpool, placed in Class 3 (B.179). Joined 6th Battalion at Queenborough. Again recommended for Medical Board and discharged on account of cardiac debility, 15/03/1917. "Sober, honest and steady."
