History while in the forces

Summer 1915: left for France
16 Jan 1916: raise to Lance Corporal
1917: Received the following wire for our inspection - "Mrs.Stiles, 100 acres, Sutton. 15 aaa regret to inform you no news of Corporal Stiles since ninth please see Mrs. Bailey, Clarence Cottage, Fire Station, Merton, who will give all information known. M.L.O. Havre".
Corporal Stiles was transferred some time ago from the Active Forces to the office of the Military Landing Officer at Havre on account of eyesight trouble and on the night in question went out to post a letter apparently in good health and from information gathered it is feared that he must have fallen over the quay side and been drowned.
