26 Mar 1919: served in 12th Battalion York Regiment (Sheffield City Battalion) 1914/1917 seeing active service in Egypt and France. Obtained a Commission in East Yorkshire Regiment at end of 1917 proceeding overseas again Apr 1918. Served in his Battalion as Intelligence and Education Officer, also as Acting Adjutant. Promoted to Captain Jan 1919 and demobilised at end of Feb. His Commanding Officer reports 'He is one of the most reliable and capable officers I have met, and is an excellent organiser'.
