05 Aug 1914-Aug 1915: mobilised for active service and after 10 months training was sent to Egypt and shortly after the Regiment was sent to Gallipoli where a landing was forced at Supola Bay. He was dangerously wounded and sent back to Manchester. Typhoid fever and dysentery set in and after 17 months in hospital was discharged
Jan 1917: with a discharging wound in the hand. Awarded pension 20/- a week
Feb 1917: returned to business and transferred to Croydon branch
Dec 1917: left the service of the Bank
