05 Aug 1914-Aug 1915: mobilised for active service and after 10 months training was sent to Egypt and shortly after the Regiment was sent to Gallipoli where a landing was forced at Supola Bay. He was dangerously wounded and sent back to Manchester. Typhoid fever and dysentery set in and after 17 months in hospital was dischargedJan 1917: with a discharging wound in the hand. Awarded pension 20/- a week
Feb 1917: returned to business and transferred to Croydon branch
