Jan 1916-Nov 1916: enlisted in Bankers' Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, sent to Loughton, Essex, subsequently to Portobello, Edinburgh and also DoverSep 1917: sent to France, employed on road-making, promoted to Lance Corporal, and subsequently saw much active service
Oct 1917: returned to this country to be trained for a Commission. Stationed at Lichfield
11 Jun 1918: gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 51st Royal Fusiliers. Stationed at Newmarket.
