Mar 1916: gained the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry on Western Front. He commanded the bombers during a counter attack and on hearing there were casualties immediately left his position of command and led the bombers himself. He pushed up to the enemy's barrier and then threw bombs accompanied by only two Privates.
