History while in the forces
Jun 1917 enlisted voluntarily 26th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (Bankers Battalion). Embarked for France. Promoted Lance Corporal and now full Corporal on the field. Since wounded in France and now in hospital at Canterbury. Was wounded in the Battle of the Somme, and a second time in the Battle of Messines Ridge, being in France some 17 months and being promoted on the field Lance Corporal and afterwards Corporal. On receiving his second wound was sent home to hospital in England where he was for about four months during which time he was recommended for a Commission. Was trained as a Cadet, gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in July 1918, embarked for France a second time as a Tank Officer in Aug 1918. From that date was in the thick of the fighting until Oct 23rd when he was wounded for a 3rd time, his tank being smashed up and set on fire by direct hits from large German shells. He evacuated all his men safely though one or two including himself were again wounded. Awarded Military Cross in Dec 1918.- Surname
