08 Sep 1914: enlisted 6th Battalion Manchester Regiment Territorial Force. Trained at Crowborough (Sussex) and Colchester where promoted to Lance CorporalJul 1916: sent out to France, his Battalion attached to 1/6th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment
Jan 1917: promoted to Sergeant. Returned to train as Cadet
Dec 1917: went again to France as 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment
Mar 1919: promoted Lieutenant. With Army of the Rhine, Bonn
Jul 1919: demobilised. Re-entered active service of Bank.
