History while in the forces

Went to Roffey Camp, Horsham, Sussex then sent to Whitley Bay. Crossed to France after short training, is very well and likes his work
Jan 1917: sent form of application for a Commission for signature. It being understood the application was more or less the O/C's desire. Promoted to Corporal
13 Apr 1917: killed in action. Was looking after some food for men and shell exploded at cookhouse. Death was instantaneous. O/C speaks very highly of him as a man and soldier. He was an excellent and reliable clerk.
