Feb 1917-Sep 1917: enlisted in the Royal Engineers, proceeded to Wrest Park Camp, near Ampthill for training. Subsequently to DunstableSep 1917-Oct 1918: proceeded to France, where he saw much fighting. In retreat from Somme (Mar 1918). Gassed (April 19). Two months in convalescent home then returned to active service
