Jul 1916: joined 2nd entrenching Battalion at Poperinge in Belgium worked with them for 3 months repairing trenches and dug outsSep 1916: transferred to King's Royal Rifle Corps and went to Somme area, went in front line trenches for 3 days
Dec 1916: went in trenches (advance line) between Lesboeufs and Combles and wore out knees in mud contracted trench foot and hands 10 Dec 1916, arrived hospital in France, Dec 13th, arrived hospital in England Dec 20th
Sep 1917: took part in the offensive at Ypres and wounded by nose cap of a shell. Taken to military hospital at Bath
Nov 1917: joined 6th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps at Queenborough after convalescence at Bradford on Avon. Then went to Strood for a Special Course of Cookery and passed and First Class Cook
