History while in the forces

Apr 1916: joined 2nd Bankers Battalion and sent to train at Epping Forest
Jun 1916: sent to train near Edinburgh and promoted to Lance Corporal
Jan 1917: heard that he has just finished his first spell of trench work
May 1917: after having been reported missing for about 6 weeks his body was found on 30 May buried in the ruins of a village in France. We understand he fell in the heavy fighting in the April offensive. From letters sent to his parents Mr Clare appeared to be greatly respected and liked.
