01 Jan 1916: qualifying for a Commission with Artists Rifles Officers' Training Corps. Qualifying for a Commission at Sidney Sussex College Cambridge.
Jun 1917: gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in Suffolk Regiment (1st Garrison Battalion)
Jul 1917: stationed at Milton Barracks, Gravesend
Nov 1917: transferred to Thetford, Norfolk as a convalescent after suffering a severe wound in the arm owing to the irregular explosion of a rifle bomb.
26 Mar 1918: transferred to Beaufort Hospital, Bristol to undergo a further operation in connection with his wounded arm.
Aug 1918: discharged from hospital
Oct 1918: has been transferred to South Eastern Agricultural College, Wye, Kent to undergo a course of training in scientific farming as the life there is calculated to promote the rapid recovery of the wound.
