Photograph showing Gilbert Walenn in uniform. Walenn joined No. 97 Squadron Royal Air Force as a bomber pilot at the start of the Second World War. He rose to the position of flight lieutenant and was hit by anti-aircraft fire during an operational mission. The crew bailed out safely and he was taken to the Staglag Luft III camp in Lower Silesia, Poland. He played a key role in 'The Great Escape', but was sadly one of the 50 escapees to be re-captured and executed.
