Photograph of the Whampoa Pagoda in Canton, with a caption that reads: 'Whampoa Pagoda. Whampao Pagoda, one of the three which form such conspicuous landmarks on the approach to Canton, was built during the reign of the Emperor Wan Li of the Ming dynasty, on an island called by the Chinese Pi-pa-chow or “Lute Island”, so called from its three hillocks suggesting a rough outline of the Chinese lute. The building is known as “The Pagoda of the Sea Monster,” and its preservation is in popular belief associated with the prosperity of the City'.
