Photograph of the Great Buddha statue of Kamakura, with a caption that reads: 'Daibootz. This celebrated image of the “Great Buddha” is built of bronze, but the pieces are so accurately fitted together that the joints are scarcely discernible. It is about 50 feet in height, the width of the figure at its largest part being about 30 feet. The masonry upon which it rests is six feet high, and this figure is probably the finest metal idol in the world. The interior, which is hollow, is filled with gilt images of Buddhistic Saints. The image stands in its own grounds, which are tastefully laid out, about a mile and a half from Kamakura, and is a great attraction to foreign visitors. It was rumoured some time since that the Japanese were about to break it up, but its value as a mere work of art led to foreign remonstrance, and the idea was abandoned'.
