Photograph of Macau, with a caption that reads: 'Penha Hill and Praya Grande, Macao. The above view gives a good general idea of the picturesque bay encircled by the Praya Grande and terminated at its South-Western end by the Penha Hill. The Praya is about half-a-mile in length and terminates at the end nearest the spectator at the Public Gardens, hidden in the picture by intervening buildings. Government House, opposite the mole near the centre of the curve, is a solid but rather ugly building, and is the residence of the Governor'. The 'mole' is likely to be a nautical mole - a type of pier or breakwater. It probably refers to the large stone structure that juts out from the waterfront, slightly to the right of the centre of the photograph.
