Photograph of Koon Yum San, with a caption that reads: 'Koon-Yin-San, or "The Heights", Canton. The hills thus designated – meaning "the Hill of the Goddess who hearkens to prayers" – was known as "Magazine Hill" or "The Heights" to our troops, by whom it was occupied as a head-quarters after the bombardment. The buildings at its foot were erected by Viceroy Yeh, and are fair specimens of Chinese architecture. The temple at the summit is dedicated to the Goddess above named, and with its out-buildings presents a picturesque appearance, greatly increased by the luxuriant vegetation surrounding it. A powder factory and magazine lies in a deep ravine to the Eastward'.
