Photograph of City Hall, with a caption that reads: 'The City Hall. Erected by public subscription in 1867-8-9 this building, which is one of the finest in Eastern Asia, comprises a commodious Theatre, a Library containing over 8,000 volumes, a Museum, and Spacious Ball and Supper Rooms. It was formally opened by H R H the Duke of Edinburgh on his visit to the Colony in the last-named year, and has since been the principal place of public entertainment in the Colony. In August 1871 one of the ventilators of the roof was struck by lightning, which however did but little damage'.
