Official openings mark the start of an exciting new chapter and a chance to reflect on past achievements. The grand opening of our new Shanghai premises on 23 June 1923 did just that. Nearly 60 years after HSBC first opened in the city, unexpectedly large crowds gathered to see the ceremonial unlocking of the gates to the magnificent building. Chief Manager Alexander Stephen remarked: ‘this building will be an abiding reminder of the position Wayfoong [HSBC] has achieved and of our determination that we shall leave nothing undone in our efforts to serve the public so that we may maintain that position’.
