Employees are the key ingredient in any bank’s success. In this Snapshot we meet some of the teams who played their part in growing our business in India. HSBC opened its Calcutta (Kolkata) branch as early as 1867, followed by Bombay (Mumbai) in 1869. In 1959 we purchased the Mercantile Bank, which had started out in Bombay in 1853. This firm had greater expertise and experience in India – and specialised in supporting small and medium-sized local businesses. Our employees in India today are following in the footsteps of these colleagues who laid the foundations over the first 100 years.
