About this collection
The City of London in the UK – often called the ‘Square Mile’ – is packed with history. It was founded in Roman times but now gleams with twenty-first century skyscrapers powering one of the world’s leading financial hubs. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation put down roots here when it rented two small rooms in Gresham House on Old Broad Street in July 1865. We later had spells in Nicholas Lane and Lombard Street, before moving to a purpose-built office at 9 Gracechurch Street in 1913. This snapshot picks up the story in the 1970s and follows the bank on its moves through the streets of London.
