About this collection
Between 1925 and 1939, in the heart of the City of London, a new head office was constructed for Midland Bank (now HSBC UK). It came to be known as Poultry, thanks to its prominent location at the intersection of Princes Street and Poultry. This collection of photographs captures progress on the build from 1928 to 1929. The Poultry phase of the building, with its iconic façade designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, had been largely completed and work had shifted to the next phase on Princes Street. Travel back to the 1920s to enjoy scenes from this major building project - amidst the bustle of London street life, the plot is cleared, the concrete is poured, and the steelworks rise ever higher.
