About this collection
We are proud of our very deep roots in India. HSBC opened its first Indian branch in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1867. In 1959, we acquired the Mercantile Bank which had been founded in Bombay (Mumbai) as early as 1853. For nearly a century, the two banks competed for customers on the streets of major Indian cities.
