Photograph of a mosque and minaret, with a caption that reads: 'Mahomedan Mosque and Minaret, Canton. The curious mixture of Chinese and Arabic architecture visible in this picture, with the Arabic inscription over the Chinese entrance, strikes the eye as curious. The Minaret which is 120 feet in height is known to the Chinese as the “Bare Pagoda” and is now inaccessible, the remaining buildings being purely Chinese in outline, though Moorish in their very simple decorations. A Moollah, or Mahomedan priest, resides here and instructs a very small class of youths in the Arabic character. The building was founded about A.D. 850'.
