Volunteer corps in Asia

About this collection

Colonial powers became well-established across Asia during the nineteenth century. Civilian forces, known as volunteer corps, were created during this period to help defend the international communities. From Colombo to Shanghai, these men were trained and equipped to maintain law and order. Their skills were later called upon during the First and Second World Wars, when many corps were mobilised to provide vital support to the regular army and navy. Amongst the volunteers were members of HSBC’s overseas and local staff. Take a look these photographs to learn more.
