Photograph of the river, with a caption that reads: 'View on the River. Few Rivers in the world present a more picturesque scene than that which bears to Canton the enormous fleets of junks and boats frequenting the port. A little to the right of the centre of the picture are seen the "flower boats", of such wide-spread but dubious celebrity, while enough is seen of other vessels to give a fair idea of craft which, as a rule, so crowd the stream. In the distance can be dimly seen "The Heights" famous as the place of occupation by the British troops during the late war. The tall building on the left is a pawnbrokers shop, thus constructed for additional security against fire and thieves'.
