About this collection

The notice lists coupon bond numbers that were stolen in the robbery and cautions the public against purchasing them, as they remain the property of the Manhattan Savings Institution. This infamous raid on 27 October 1878 was the largest bank robbery in US history at the time. It was conducted by George Leonidas Leslie (the 'King of the Bank Robbers'). The haul included USD11,000 in cash, USD73,000 in negotiable bonds and USD2.8 million in non-negotiable securities. The bonds were cancelled and re-issued so that customers did not lose money.
