Fun in the sun

Fun in the sun

About this collection

Summer camps became popular in Switzerland as an antidote to increasing levels of urbanisation and industrialisation during the late nineteenth century. These new camps gave youngsters the chance to enjoy sunshine and fresh air in a healthy break from city life. They spread throughout Europe and then extended to the United States and Japan. Their golden age was the 1950s and 1960s. In France, voluntary staff committees organised annual summer camps for employees’ children as part of their social welfare programmes. Join some young holidaymakers in the countryside via these camp brochures published by Crédit Commercial de France (now HSBC Continental Europe).
