Cartoon of Edward Holden from the 'Town Crier', a Birmingham journal. The cartoon is entitled 'A little bit off the top' and a man is shown looking over a fence at Holden, who is pictured in hunting attire holding a shotgun and a rabbit. The hunted rabbit is annotated as the 'City of Birmingham Bank' and there are a number of other rabbits on the ground, with the names of banks written on them including City Bank, Central London, Leeds and Bradford, Union, Manchester Joint Stock Bank, Derby Commercial, Leamington Priors and Coventry Union. These were all rent acquisitions that had recently helped transform Midland from a small Birmingham-based bank, into a key player on the UK banking scene. Holden was considered a mastermind in the art of deal-making.
