Photograph of Canton, with a caption that reads: 'General View of Canton. Even photography can scarcely do justice to the enormous Panorama spread out to the eye of the gazer upon the City of Canton. The Pearl River is faintly visible in the distance, while the intervening roofs are computed to house very little short of three millions of people. For nearly a thousand years an important commercial mart, it has been frequented by Europeans ever since the early part of the Sixteenth Century. A comprehensive description, history, &c., of the City and environs will be found in the Treaty Ports of China and Japan, p. 116, et seq'.
