This building, more properly known as the "Confucian College" and originally used as a place for study and examination, is one of the "Sights" of Canton. Till 1856 but one image of Confucius was known to exist in the empire, but in that year another representation of the sage was formally placed in position in this establishment. The pedestal of this was destroyed during the bombardment, and the vast and rambling edifice was subsequently given up to the use of H. B. M.'s Consular students. It has now reverted to its original use, and candidates for the district examinations occupy the rooms upon payment of a small fee'.
