Photograph of the Five-storied Pagoda, with a caption that reads: 'The Five-storied Pagoda, Canton. A by no means elegant, barn-like edifice, coloured red, erected on the North Wall in A.D. 1368, in obedience to the suggestion of a soothsayer, who recommended that a pile of masonry should be raised on that spot to construct the unfavourable influences said, by geomantic superstition, to flow from the North. It was occupied as quarters by the British troops upon the capture of the City in 1857'.
