Photograph of François (Frank) de Bovis. Bovis joined the bank's London office in 1870 and travelled to Hong Kong in 1872. He spent time at branches in China, India and Lyon, France, before taking over as Chief Manager in February 1891. He is the only Frenchman to have taken up the highest position within the bank. It proved to be a particularly challenging time at the helm and he effectively resigned from the position in March 1893 to make way for the return of Thomas Jackson, a previous Chief Manager. Bovis returned to France to manage the Lyon branch until his retirement in 1922.
