Photograph of the Grand Temple of Kamakura, with a caption that reads: 'Grand Temple of Kamakura. An historical interest attaches to the vast congeries of temples of which the above has been selected as an illustration, the great emperor Taiko Sama (circa 1650) having, it is said, worshipped at their shrines. They possess another and mournful interest for Englishmen, as being within a short distance of the spot where Major Baldwin and Lieut. Bird were murdered in 1864. Kamakura, once an important city, is now little better than a village, its fame and revenue alike depending on its magnificent temples. The attention paid by the Japanese to scenic effect in arboriculture is here illustrated'.
