Photograph of workers weaving part of the tapestry that was manufactured in Birkenhead for the bank's board room. The tapestry, part finished, is attached to a loom, which is in turn stretched by heavy metal chains and pulleys to a wooden beam running along the side of the room. The tapestry was designed by Laurence Gotch and H M Martyn & Co, and features the coats of arms of 130 towns and cities where Midland Bank had branches located. An acoustic material called Cabot quilting, which was treated with seaweed, was installed behind the tapestry to aid acoustic issues in the large board room.
