About this collection
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation opened for business in Binondo, Manila, in November 1875. Over the following decades, we set to work financing the trade in sugar, hemp, rice, coffee and coconut oil. We were also busy advising the government and helping to fund railway expansion. A century and a half later, through many ups and downs, HSBC still connects the Philippines to the rest of the world. Explore these images to find out more.
