About this collection

Midland Bank (now HSBC UK) opened the Cardiff Docks branch in 1893 and appointed Richard Richards as manager. His knowledge of local industry and shipping was instrumental in building up the customer base and delivering profits. He became a banking legend in Wales, and was promoted to Joint General Manager at head office in 1918. Before he journeyed to London, his staff surprised him with a beautiful album to remind him of his Cardiff days. The pages contain images of staff, past and present. Many of the men are in uniform, having just served in the First World War. The photographs of women on later pages are some of the earliest pictures we have of female employees. Richards is praised for his ‘business ability, unfailing courtesy and kindly consideration,‘ in a poignant reflection on the leadership and teamwork that goes into running a successful branch.
