About this collection

We have a huge number of historical staff photographs in the HSBC Archives collection. There is one group portrait of overseas staff at our Shanghai branch in 1873 that is particularly special. Not only is it one of the oldest of all our staff photos, but we’re also able to trace so many vivid stories about the men pictured. Take a closer look at some of the tragic, fascinating and impressive careers amongst this early group of HSBC’s raw recruits and legendary leaders.
