London calling: our global HQ

About this collection

HSBC’s global headquarters at 8 Canada Square form part of the iconic cityscape of Canary Wharf in London, UK. Development of the city’s Docklands has been dramatic over the last quarter of a century. It’s now hard to recall the soggy hole in the ground that existed before construction began on our new 45-storey tower in early 1999. Sir (now Lord) Norman Foster, architect of our rebuilt premises in Hong Kong, partnered with us again. His design would be much more streamlined for the twenty first century. Even so, there was still a nod to the bank’s culture and traditions. A Feng Shui Master was consulted during the design process; and replicas of the Hong Kong lion statues were cast to guard the entrance as the building was officially opened on 2 April 2003. Take a closer look at the construction project through this snapshot.
