About this collection

The earliest surviving cheque in England dates from 1659. They gained widespread popularity as a method of payment in the late 1800s and Midland Bank (now HSBC UK) soon spotted an opportunity to support local business. They designed bespoke cheques advertising customers’ names and services. These examples now offer a window on our clients in the Birmingham business community in the early twentieth century.
